HD Online Player (Portable FrontPage 2003)
when everything is as you want it to be you can go to the file menu and choose publish site. you can publish via ftp, webdav, file system (direct copy to the web server directory), or via frontpage or sharepoint services if your web server supports that. if your web server supports frontpage extensions, after publishing the content you can edit the published content directly online without the need of saving on the local computer and then publish the changes.
the itunes store also made available a wide variety of music downloads from artists and other independent companies, and this attracted more listeners to the service. when apple announced its free ipod shuffle, people flocked to buy the devices to fill up their mp3 players. this and the low price of the ipod shuffle ($149) made the ipod the dominant player in the mp3 player market, and this was reflected in sales. it sold more than 20 million units in its first nine months of availability.
the ipod did not stop there. ipod nano brought the easy to carry size of the classic to the new generation, and the ipod shuffle brought the shuffle concept to music players. these and other devices have helped to push the ipod above 30 million units sold in 2008, a new all-time high.
for those who wanted to go beyond the player and download music, apple introduced the ipod touch. the touch brought the ipod screen to a phone, and was a hit. the original touch sold more than 2 million units in its first year. the touch introduced the touch screen, touch controls and the app store for the first time on a portable device. this has been followed by the iphone, ipod touch and the ipad, which has sold more than 21 million units to date, making it apple’s most successful consumer product ever.
i remember when i was in school we had to create web pages using a web authoring tool called frontpage. i always hated the program, but my instructors were all pretty nice and really made it easy for me to create all of my webpages. it was a lot of fun, but after graduation i started working with java and quickly forgot everything i learned in web authoring. nowadays, after 10 years, i use a different program for web creation and dont even know if that software still exists. when it comes to web design, there are definitely some good tools out there, but when it comes to web programming, i would probably stick with what i know, if i had to pick.
to make a long story short, frontpage is a great program for designers, but its not a great program for programmers. its text editor is pretty good, but it has no code checking feature, which makes it a real pain to design web pages. it has a pretty good code editor, but it’s hard to see the results without running the program, which i always do.
frontpage is also prone to making a lot of bloated file size and downloading very slowly. i believe that is because of the way the application is compiled. if you want to try it out, you may find the trial version works fine, but the full version is annoying.
full of features, sharepoint services is capable of serving as an intermediary between the content provider and the web server hosting the website. this way you can publish content directly online without the need of saving on the local computer and then publish the changes. furthermore, sharepoint services has a proprietary search service that allows you to find and search content in your published sites easily.
