the movie’s too clever to be fun. the filmmakers lay it on so thick that even the most dedicated viewer will just be too busy trying to follow the multiple plots to figure out what’s going on. a new wrinkle this time around is that some of the characters have their own clients and their own objectives that directly conflict with each other. in the first movie, mabry wanted to kill meryl stryfe ( anna kendrick ), who was working for him but managed to escape; in this one, its the other way around. we’re supposed to care about who survives because we’re supposed to think that the other characters are actual people, but we dont.
the problem is that we’re not really meant to, and the movie doesn’t make any real effort to make you care, even though the makers still seem to think they can get away with it. the story works because it’s so clearly constructed and that’s all we really need to know. the plot is so well-designed and executed that theres no need to explore the characters in any real way. we get the sense that they’re all presented as a kind of extended joke on hollywood, but no one really acts like that, and the characters and their motivations don’t become funnier or more interesting the longer you watch them. theyre just kind of bland.
