Worst case scenario, you may lose hours to this tool. When you have a good feeling with it then throw it away, when you’ll regret your did you’ll wasted time and no lost money.
Time is money. In 3D modeling with Maya or Blender, as in any other professional software, time is money. You cannot afford to lose hours of your time to little cracks or bugs. I’ve recently started testing the new DCC Tools, and I couldn’t be more happy with the way the software works right now.
What’s DCC? It stands for Drag and Drop Maya Content. It’s an alternative to working with 3D models and textures one by one in Maya/Blender. It is, in my opinion, a more efficient way to work.
The tool offers three modes: setup, import, export. The export mode is quite simple, but it’s the import mode that really impresses me. Imagine you can drag and drop Maya meshes, Maya lights, textures, cameras and animations (physical, rigs, rigidbodies) into a scene without having to manually create or edit anything. An amazing feature, if I may say so.
The new DCC Tools can create very nice setups in minutes, like this:
The setup mode is a bit more complex, but still very pleasant. You can create parent/child relationships between objects, create and assign transforms, automatically link materials between instances of objects (it’s a really powerful feature), assign/remove modifiers, etc. The workflow is very intuitive and yet very powerful.
In the Import mode there’s a lot to say. You can drag and drop Maya objects into the tool, assign them to any bone and object, link materials and apply modifiers. Also, if you’ve used Maya before, you’ll be really impressed by the feature of auto-assignment. It’s amazingly easy to work with.
The best feature of the DCC Tools is the speed of the workflow. I’ve seen great results in a short time. For example, in a 10-minute scene (I’ve created several dozens of scenes for this review), the tool created a basic scene by creating a bunch of assestements and applying colors on a single instance of object. So, it’s really fast. One of the most impressive results is the ability to work with the child controllers (bones) of a mesh without having to re-pose it. It’s amazing!
